Welcome to FX MIND SET Forex Tutorial — Class 04.

In the previous lessons, we introduced the fundamentals of Forex trading. In this class, we will learn one of the most important concepts in Forex Currency Pairs.
Before entering any Forex trade, you need to understand how currency pairs work, what the base and quote currencies mean, and the differences between Major, Minor, and Exotic currency pairs.
What Is a Forex Currency Pair?
In Forex trading, currencies are traded in pairs because you are always exchanging one currency against another.
For example:
EUR/USD
This means the Euro is being compared with the US Dollar.
If EUR/USD is trading at 1.1000, it means:
1 Euro = 1.10 US Dollars
The first currency is called the Base Currency, while the second currency is called the Quote Currency.
Base Currency vs Quote Currency
Understanding these two terms is essential for every Forex trader.
Base Currency
The currency on the left side of a currency pair is called the Base Currency.
Example:
GBP/USD
Here:
- GBP = Base Currency
- USD = Quote Currency
The exchange rate tells us how much of the quote currency is required to buy one unit of the base currency.
Quote Currency
The currency on the right side of a currency pair is called the Quote Currency.
Example:
GBP/USD = 1.3000
This means:
1 GBP = 1.30 USD
So, remember this simple rule:
Left side = Base Currency
Right side = Quote Currency
What Are Major Currency Pairs?
Major currency pairs are the most actively traded currency pairs in the Forex market.
They include the US Dollar and one of the major global currencies.
The commonly traded major pairs are:
| Currency Pair | Currencies |
|---|---|
| EUR/USD | Euro / US Dollar |
| GBP/USD | British Pound / US Dollar |
| USD/JPY | US Dollar / Japanese Yen |
| USD/CHF | US Dollar / Swiss Franc |
| AUD/USD | Australian Dollar / US Dollar |
| USD/CAD | US Dollar / Canadian Dollar |
| NZD/USD | New Zealand Dollar / US Dollar |
Why Are Major Pairs Popular?
Major currency pairs generally offer:
- High liquidity
- Large trading volume
- Competitive spreads
- Strong market participation
- Better execution conditions in many market environments
However, market conditions can change, so traders should always check the current spread and volatility before entering a trade.
What Are Minor Currency Pairs?
Minor currency pairs are currency pairs that do not contain the US Dollar but involve major currencies.
They are also commonly called Cross Currency Pairs or simply Crosses.
Examples include:
- EUR/GBP
- EUR/JPY
- GBP/JPY
- AUD/JPY
- EUR/AUD
- GBP/AUD
For example:
EUR/GBP
This pair compares the Euro against the British Pound.
There is no US Dollar in the pair, so it is considered a cross/minor pair.
What Are Exotic Currency Pairs?
Exotic currency pairs generally combine a major currency with the currency of an emerging or smaller economy.
Examples include:
- USD/TRY
- USD/ZAR
- USD/MXN
- USD/SGD
Exotic pairs can behave differently from major pairs.
They may experience:
- Wider spreads
- Lower liquidity
- Higher volatility
- Greater transaction costs
- Larger price movements during certain market conditions
Because of these characteristics, beginner traders should approach exotic pairs carefully and understand the risks before trading them.
How to Read a Currency Pair
Let’s take an example:
EUR/USD = 1.0800
This means:
1 EUR = 1.0800 USD
Now imagine EUR/USD moves from:
1.0800 → 1.0900
The Euro has increased in value relative to the US Dollar.
If EUR/USD moves from:
1.0800 → 1.0700
The Euro has decreased in value relative to the US Dollar.
Remember that currency movements always represent the relative value of one currency against another.
What Does Buy EUR/USD Mean?
Suppose EUR/USD is trading at:
1.0800
If you believe the Euro will strengthen relative to the US Dollar, you may consider:
BUY EUR/USD
You are effectively buying EUR while selling USD.
If the price rises after your entry, the position can potentially move into profit.
What Does Sell EUR/USD Mean?
If you believe the Euro will weaken relative to the US Dollar, you may consider:
SELL EUR/USD
You are effectively selling EUR while buying USD.
If the price falls after your entry, the position can potentially move into profit.
Of course, every Forex trade carries risk, and price can move against your analysis.
Which Currency Pairs Are Best for Beginners?
There is no single currency pair that is perfect for every trader.
However, beginners often start by studying liquid major pairs such as:
- EUR/USD
- GBP/USD
- USD/JPY
These pairs can be easier to study because they generally have substantial market participation.
Before trading any pair, always consider:
- Spread
- Volatility
- Liquidity
- Trading session
- News events
- Your trading strategy
- Risk management
The goal is not to trade many pairs. The goal is to understand the pairs you trade.
Is XAU/USD a Currency Pair?
No.
XAU/USD is not a traditional currency pair.
Here:
- XAU = Gold
- USD = US Dollar
XAU/USD represents the price of Gold in US Dollars.
Gold is extremely popular among Forex and CFD traders, but it can behave differently from traditional currency pairs and can experience significant volatility.
At FX MIND SET, Gold trading and XAU/USD analysis are important parts of our broader trading education.
Major vs Minor vs Exotic Pairs
Here is a simple comparison:
| Type | Example | USD Included? | Typical Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major | EUR/USD | Yes | High liquidity and high trading activity |
| Minor / Cross | EUR/GBP | No | Major currencies without USD |
| Exotic | USD/TRY | Yes | Major + emerging/smaller-market currency |
These classifications help traders understand the general characteristics of different Forex instruments.
